The U10 Kent Championships took place at Three Hills Sports Park on Sunday in wind, rain, snow, hail and sunshine! The Folkestone Optimist U10 Girls started their Kent Plate tournament slowly with a 0-0 draw against Marden Pears, before goals from Scarlett Craig and Darcey Rowe saw the Ops claim a 2-0 victory against Canterbury. The silky speed of Isla Coombs helped the team to a 3-0 win vs Ashford, before Craig & Rowe got on the score sheet again in the 2-0 win vs Sevenoaks. Resolute defending from Lucie Allon & Sully Morgan, combined with some excellent saves from Holly Shaw thwarted the Burnt Ash attack, and Ops saw an attempt on goal cleared off the line, which meant the match remained goalless. Lily Colao won the ball in midfield before starting the Ops attack as Aphra Oetzmann’s goal was the decider against Maidstone. Ops suffered their only defeat of the day in their last game against a talented Marden Apples side, who were the eventual winners of the Kent Plate Tournament. Having played 7 games, won 4, drawn 2 and lost 1, the Ops girls were rewarded for their efforts with a 2nd Place finish and Silver medals. Huge thanks to all the supporters who braved the variety of weather whilst cheering the girls to a very successful season’s work!
