Sitting proud at the summit of the table after three games, the Folkestone Mighty 7s went into Saturday morning’s 10:45 AM clash with Gillingham Anchorians determined to protect their top spot. The challenge was made all the greater with a few notable absences from the lineup—most significantly joint-top goalscorer and inspirational team captain, Dan "The Mule" Kennedy.
First Half: High Pressure & Cruel Setbacks
Folkestone exploded out of the blocks, sticking firmly to the pre-game plan of pressing hard and high from the front. The intent was clear early on when Mjolnir intercepted a clearance and drove forward, firing just wide of the post.
A major tactical weapon for the Mighty 7s throughout the half was Messy's precision aerial passing. With the front line intelligent enough to drop deep toward the halfway line, Messy repeatedly launched flighted balls over the top of the Gillingham backline, setting Dave, Reedy, and Andrew loose on the counter. Dave was heavily involved early, seeing a flurry of chances go begging as he shot wide, deflected off target, and rattled the post.
Despite Folkestone dominating open play, it was Gillingham who drew first blood against the run of play, taking a 1–0 lead via a heavily deflected penalty corner.
Undeterred, the Mighty 7s resumed their relentless pressure. The equalizer came courtesy of J-Lo, who popped up with his first goal of the season. Following the breakdown of a Folkestone short corner, the ball fell kindly to J-Lo, who unleashed an absolute rocket past the stranded Gillingham keeper to make it 1–1.
Folkestone continued to dictate terms, with Gillingham barely getting a look-in thanks to a dominant defensive display from Pricey, Luce, Crab, and OG. Yet, in cruel fashion, Gillingham snatched the lead back before the break. Ozzie pulled off a brilliant primary save from another short corner, but the rebound fell awkwardly to a Gillingham forward who slotted it home to send Folkestone into halftime trailing 1–2.
Second Half: The Comeback & Decisive Strike
At the interval, team leaders Messy and Bakes rallied the squad, reminding everyone that the victory was there for the taking if the intensity remained high.
Folkestone responded instantly, pressing Gillingham high off the whistle. The pressure paid off when Dave found acres of space on the right flank, driving aggressively into the circle before laying off a precise pass to Mjolnir, who drilled a ruthless shot into the bottom corner to restore parity at 2–2.
The momentum had completely shifted, and the lead soon belonged to Folkestone. Mjolnir cut open the defense with a sharp pass into MVG, which took a deflection and trickled past the keeper to make it 3–2.
Folkestone’s fourth and final goal was a masterclass in team interplay—and a well-deserved reward for Dave’s tireless work rate up front. Messy initiated the move with a cracking pass intended for Mjolnir; though intercepted, the ball broke to J-Lo, who instantly snapped a first-time pass back to Mjolnir. Mjolnir took a crisp touch and fired a sharp ball into Dave in the circle, who made no mistake, turning it low into the bottom corner for 4–2.
Gillingham managed to nick a late goal back from a scramble to make it 4–3, setting up a tense finish. MVG came agonizingly close to reinstating the two-goal cushion before the final whistle confirmed another vital three points, keeping Folkestone firmly atop the table.
Post-Match Reaction
Speaking after the game, missing captain Dan "The Mule" Kennedy gave his characteristic assessment of the victory:
"I could not be prouder of these lads. To go out there and put on a display like they did is unreal. It was made incredibly harder for them by not having me there, of course."
