With last week’s epic win at Blackheath fresh in their minds (despite some very poor press coverage) club favourites the Sevens were at home to host BBHC for the return fixture.

With wayward travellers back from overseas excursions, the Sevens had virtually a full squad to select from which presented its own headaches with everyone wanting a piece of Sevens action including previous week’s debutant Andy Walls – let it go Andy, we’ll get you another game soon, I’m sure – and others wanting to feature in Folkestone’s very own Galácticos. As the push back commenced, the mood was high, underlined with a steely determination to get the job done and tell victorious tales at the bar later to anyone who’ll listen.

Our heroes started brightly, looking to employ some of the great work undertaken in training earlier in the week, shifting the ball quickly up field looking for an early goal and it was soon clear to the visitors that they would have their work cut out as from young wannabe farmer Well Played Riley – playing in his old defensive position for a change – to the mids of Reedy and the Fronz marshalled by the centre maestro Messy started to stamp their authority on the game with probing runs excellent passing.

And the first wasn’t long in coming, either. A long corner saw that man Messy bobbing and weaving like a prize fighter into the D, dancing through the defence to reverse past the keeper and open his account for the day. The visitors seemed perplexed by this rapid play, which turned more to exasperation as the second followed quickly – a great pass from Luce Cannon – one he would elaborate on for quite some time in the bar later – to Borris, who deftly flicked it to Mjölnir whose reverse slap gave the keeper no chance: 2-0 and the Mighties tails well and truly up.

With the ever-animated Mjölnir making his presence – and voice – felt, the visitors were now clearly rattled and in no time, his flick to the Fronz saw the ball deflected in for the home side’s third.

The Fronz clearly had his shooting boots on as once more as following some electric play from the ever-enthusiastic spaniel-like Reedy who slipped the ball through to him, our curiously-darked haired midfielder wrong footed the keeper and slapped home his second. Could a hattrick be on the cards?

Well, not if Mjölnir had anything to say about it – which of course, he did. Another link up from Messy saw the ball through for the imposing centre-forward to smash the ball through the keeper’s legs. Such was the pace, the keeper looked as if he was trying to get out of the way of the Exocet missile coming his way: 5-0 and half time.

Although now cruising, a halftime talk ensured that heads remained screwed on and no let-up in concentration to let the visitors back in any way. Keeper Milk Tray was also beginning to wonder if his request to not see the ball at all for the game might actually come true as both he and the back line were having a relatively quiet game. The stalwart backs of Crab and HB along with WPR snuffed out any threats and were ensuring that our sturdy keeper was virtually a spectator for this fixture.

With Richard Tumble working the right and Luce Cannon the left, the pitch was being well covered with some great balls being threaded through and opportunities being created. The ever-enigmatic Skipper Mule was unlucky to not quite connect on a couple of occasions, but one such excursion earnt a short corner which, from a quick injection from Messy was suitable buried by Mjölnir for the home side’s sixth.

Not content with winding up the visitors at every opportunity, Mjölnir then buried his fourth of the game following a deft pass from The Fronz and the host’s seventh. With the clock winding down, this surely had to be it?

Again, no. With the visitors now truly beleaguered, Bonzio, returning from a broken foot injury swept the ball across the D for Mjölnir to get a slight touch to then fall at the feet of Borris to tuck the ball in from a tight angle: 8-0. The game was now wrapped up.

Except it wasn’t. In almost a carbon copy of his earlier goal, Messy weaved into the D from another long corner and smashed a reverse for the host’s ninth of the game. At the very death of the game, the visitors managed somehow to earn a short corner which they converted for a consolation goal. Final score: 9-1.

We caught up with the jubilant skipper Mule for a few post-match words: “What a game. In the previous fixture away to BBHC we got caught early with a goal against us before we came back and eventually won 5-1, so this time around, we wanted to get out of the gates quickly, which I’m delighted to say we did.

“We played some of our best hockey so far last week and we wanted to build on that today. And, to a man, we did – we kept up a quick pace for the whole game with some tight passing and moving, good calling and positional work. Our keeper is forever telling us to defend from the front, and boy, did we today – he didn’t actually touch the ball at all today and had so little work to do he’s questioning whether it’s worth having a shower at all! (He did, by the way – we insisted).

“For sure, it’s a great scoreline, but all credit to BBHC for not giving up and fighting to the end, doing their level best to not let Mjölnir live rent-free in their heads….not sure that last bit worked though. It would have been good if we’d been able to play on pitch one as a game like this is a great advert for what the Sevens are all about; we might have moved up a league, but so far, we’re setting the pace and winning key games. We’re loving our hockey, the team’s in great spirits and playing well as a unit. But, we’re far from complacent as we know it takes very little for that to change, but we keep working hard, creating chances and creating opportunities.”
