Ops youngsters in hard fought victory on the road

Paul Andrews3 Nov 2024 - 15:42

Younsgters in the goals!

The 6's made the trip to Gillingham Anchorians knowing that they would be in for a tough game. They started brightly, moving the ball well through midfield, with Paul Andrews sending passes through the Anchs defensive line for the ever willing runners, including Finn Letley down the right and Joel Davidson through the centre. A slightly less willing runner in the shape of Deryl Gilham-Jones was also found in space, and the Ops began to turn up the pressure. Anchs were no slouches though, and when they strung together passes in attack it took some fine defending from Daniel Andrews, Dave Brazier, Ali Walls and Joseph Allon to keep them at bay, with 'keeper Charlie Milligan also called into action on occasion. It was somewhat against the run of play though when a defensive mis-communication gave the big Anchs forward the chance to steal the ball and finish calmly past the on-rushing Milligan. Ops did not take this lying down though, and continued to press, with Arthur Ireland and Jake Davidson carrying the attack to the Anchs. Sustained pressure, and some quick thinking on free hits saw the ball arrive on the end of Letley jr's stick just outside the Anchs circle. A quick dart forward and a crashing strike saw the youngster notch up his second of the season, and this really spurred the Ops on. Pressure continued to build, and from a short corner Andrews sr slipped the ball to Letley. This time his shot caught a defenders stick on the way through, with the deflection completely wrong-footing the 'keeper, and Oscar Daley applying the final touch from inches out. Half time saw the Ops 2-1, evoking memories of the sort of spirit they displayed in their last game in coming back from being behind. In the second half, a change of formation saw more space opening up for the Ops, but this also allowed Anchs more time and space and Borris Nordone was called into action repeatedly to snuff out their attacks. Milligan produced a couple of blinding saves to keep his team in front, and when Andrews sr won the ball on the edge of his own d, he was able to progress forward and release Joel Davidson in space. Joel ate up the ground in front of him and released his younger brother Jake in the Anchs 23. A skilful spin and shot saw the Ops 3-1 up with about 10 to play. Anchs surge forward in search of a way back into the game, but the Ops defence held firm to close out a fine win away from home.
