There was an eerie mist hanging over the air as I arrived at the Gateway to Sporting Excellence - the Polo Farm Sports Club in Canterbury - for the high noon, top-of-the-table clash between Canterbury and Folkestone. This was no ordinary game, though. During the week we learned the heart-breaking news that one of the true legends of the club had passed away suddenly. Before the start of the game there was a minute's applause and a few poignant words from one of the senior members of the team. The sombre atmosphere was tinged with sadness. The team could have been forgiven for being overcome by the emotions of the occasion. However, what followed was one of the greatest games of hockey that I have ever had the privilege of watching. The final score, Canterbury 5 Folkestone 4, tells only a small part of the story. The definition of a club legend is: a player, manager or figure who has achieved iconic status through exceptional long-term performance, unwavering loyalty and significant contributions to a team's success. He was a kind and gentle man and a very private and humble person who led by character and example. He was a mentor, a leader, and, above all, a friend to so many. He has left a lasting legacy which will never be forgotten. RIP Ali Walls.
