Folkestone 2nd XI marked the club's 100th anniversary in the most emphatic fashion possible, sweeping aside Canterbury 2nd XI with a sensational 5-0 victory at The Three Hills Sports Park.
On a day steeped in history, the hosts produced a performance worthy of the occasion, blending youthful exuberance, experienced leadership and relentless intensity to send a clear message to the rest of the division.
The breakthrough arrived courtesy of one of Folkestone's brightest young talents. Picking up possession on the 25-yard line, Will Ball ignored the cries for a pass and set off on a determined run into the circle. With defenders backing off, Ball unleashed a fierce strike that thundered past the Canterbury goalkeeper to spark jubilant celebrations and give Folkestone a deserved early lead.
Twenty minutes in, the home side doubled their advantage with a move that showcased both quality and teamwork. Former 1st XI captain Luke Smithard, one of four ex-1st team captains featuring, expertly brought down an aerial ball before driving purposefully towards the circle. Spotting Hugo Furneaux, Smithard fed his teammate, who in turn found Garrett Llewellyn. His initial effort rebounded kindly, but instead of taking a second shot, Llewellyn selflessly squared the ball back to Smithard, who crashed home from close range to make it 2-0.
Many expected Canterbury to respond after the interval, but it was Folkestone who continued to ask all the questions.
The third goal arrived after a blistering burst down the right flank from Jamie Miller-Hastings. Charging past his marker, he fired a dangerous cross into the circle where Ball was waiting. The youngster produced a touch of class, guiding a deft reverse-stick deflection beyond the helpless goalkeeper for his second goal of the afternoon and Folkestone's third.
The visitors' misery deepened when division top scorer Alex Wishart stepped up from a penalty corner. With captain Bristow once again adding to his growing collection of assists, Wishart's trademark drag flick flew low and hard past the goalkeeper's stick side to extend the lead to 4-0.
The scoring was completed soon after. Furneaux turned provider once more, delivering a pinpoint pass to the back post where Arthur Ireland had ghosted into space. Showing composure beyond his years, the youngster calmly slotted home his ninth league goal of the campaign to cap a memorable afternoon.
While the forwards grabbed the headlines, Folkestone's dominance was built on outstanding work throughout the pitch. At the heart of the defence, Rory Fry was imperious, repelling every Canterbury attack with authority and composure. Alongside him, Theo Coombes set the tone with relentless running and intensity, never allowing the visitors a moment's comfort on the ball.
As the final whistle sounded, players and supporters alike celebrated a result fitting of the club's centenary year. Five goals, a clean sheet and a performance full of character ensured that this anniversary fixture will be remembered long after the celebrations have ended.
