Despite a spirited first-half performance and an outstanding display from goalkeeper Lucy, Folkestone Optimists Ladies 4s were ultimately defeated 6-1 away to Maidstone Ladies 2s on Saturday.
Playing on Maidstone's home turf, Folkestone started brightly and competed well throughout the opening half. The visitors were rewarded when a well-worked short corner routine resulted in a superb goal, beautifully played by Natalie Harvey. The strike kept Folkestone firmly in the contest, with the teams going into the break at 2-1.
The second half proved more challenging as Maidstone raised the intensity and began to dominate possession. Their increased pressure resulted in four further goals, stretching the final scoreline to 6-1.
However, the score could have been far higher were it not for an exceptional performance between the posts from Lucy, who produced save after save to frustrate the home side.
Lucy’s bravery, composure and shot-stopping ability kept Folkestone battling throughout the match and earned her a thoroughly deserved Player of the Match award.
While the result was disappointing, there were positives to take from the first-half display, including the well-executed short corner goal and the team's determination against strong opposition. Folkestone will be looking to build on those moments as they prepare for their next fixture.
