3's had another early start, this time making the trip to Sittingbourne to play table toppers Gore Court. Ops started well, moving the ball fluently from defence to attack and threatening to cause an upset. Em was a live wire up front, and Ops won a number of penalty corners. Baxter saw her effort well saved, while Polly shot just wide from the follow up. The hosts were stunned into action, constantly trying to play on the break, only to find Ailla unbeatable as she repeatedly raced off her line to clear.
The opening goal was controversial, the umpire awarding a long corner following a shot the Gore Court forward had put wide without an Ops touch. The visitors were already lining up to take the hit out when their opponents took the hit quickly, and tucked the ball in. That upped the tension and the game quickly heated up. Sophie was targeted for some rough treatment but continued to work hard and linked with Carris to win another penalty corner. The keeper again made the first save, and Ops just couldn't force the ball home. The home side were awarded a penalty flick late in the first half, but, once again Ailla made the save, flying across her goal to deny the chance.
Only one down at half time and all to play for, 3's started the 2nd half much as they started the first, working hard and winning penalty corners. Phoebe carried the ball into the D, to set up a melee in front of goal, but the ball just wouldn't go in. As time ticked on, the game became increasingly open with both teams looking threatening. Sienna has slotted seamlessly into the 3's and was proving a handful with her movement and stick skills. Ailla continued to impress, at one point clearing the ball to the half way line to set up an attack! The defence was working very hard, Geds stopped a shot on the line while Shaz managed to get back and clear another goal bound effort. Gore Court finally managed a second from after a succession of penalty corners, but Ops still wouldn't give up. Emma linked with Janman to work the ball into the D for Polly to fire to the far post where Dani was lurking only to see the ball go just past the post.
So 2:0 the final score, but Ops could be justifiably proud of a fighting performance in a very difficult away match.
